Juha-Pekka Väisänen:
Down with elitist culture politics!
I totally disagree with every greenish right-wing politician about Helsinki not affording to respond to the challenges set by the culture field. We true and quite ordinary Finns, well acquainted with every day life, have been taught that everything above us that has been told has to be accepted without demur. I totally disagree that we must believe everything that the present municipal decision-makers tell us as the truth. It is a total lie when these people in power say that for instance there is no money for city happenings or minorities’ own culture. There is money but it is allocated based on political decisions. And these political decisions have been wrong!
Down with the capitalists’ swindle!
Culture to Helsinki’s greenish right is a factor decorating the image of the city. Helsinki is a brand and culture is varnishing it. The brand offers the market for the culture field, and the decision-makers want to create to the market new culture entrepreneurs. Visual artists, dancers and academic researchers, in the present political scene, have to transform their mental capital into products, pretend to be entrepreneurs and enter in the fair capitalist market created by the decision-makers in power.
I totally disagree with the green right whether private enterprises and capitalistic competition are compatible with the cultural scene. Culture is so much more and profound than earning one’s livelihood and increasing the gross national income. Culture is the right to one’s own voice. Culture is the right to define one’s own existence in the world. Helsinki’s present decision-makers have for a long time been exercising wrong politics in which a man’s basic rights are seen as promoting the interests of business economy.
Down with the conservatives exercising wrong politics!
Helsinki city is such a rich city that every day a surplus of a million Euros is left over the budget. The budget is a political plan how to use the money available. The city has more outstanding claims than debt. And then they have the nerve – the lousy decision-makers elected at the last election – they have the nerve to keep the culture people hanging in the social services and the bread queues. There our colleagues are in the bread queues as their work shops and unemployment benefits in their own artistic work for the sake of getting employed have been deprived. There they, our colleagues are in the bread queues, as the city with its social and building bureaux are not commissioning work from culture professionals but is starving its artists and scientists to death instead. They have the nerve to show zero budgets to highly educated professionals. And the have the nerve to be conservative enough that they don’t understand that culture is also other than their upstairs refined galas and culture clubs and encounters with raised little fingers.
The right to own culture and work!
I demand that one of the four millions of the savings due to the under budgeting and surplus is specially allocated to culture so that it is possible for the professionals to work in the culture field.
Culture is the right to one’s own voice and the right to define the existence in one’s own world. Affluent Helsinki is due to commercialism and wrong politics a melting pot of the dissatisfaction of the outcast, the silent and the poor. Now we must elect a substantial amount of money to the city’s culture budget for various minorities: immigrants, sexual minorities, rainbow families, language minorities, religious minorities etc. The city’s culture governance must be changed so that when deciding about the money for the culture of these minorities in the municipal boards in question, there is always their own representative present. Local councils must be established and take decision making closer to an individual citizen. A step towards a more democratic and more open decision making must be taken, and this can happen only by sharing power and inviting minorities to decide themselves about the multitude of their own culture.

Identiteetti -puheenvuoro Keskuskomiteassa 15.3.
